Sagmeister - 3D Typographic Illustration
Hand-crafted 3D typography created before the era of automation and generative tools.
Context
In 2005, I received an invitation that would become a turning point in my creative journey: to contribute a bespoke 3D typographic illustration for the renowned designer Stefan Sagmeister’s book Things I Have Learned in My Life So Far, alongside Gui Borchet.
The challenge was clear yet demanding: craft a three-dimensional expression of the phrase “My dreams have no meaning” without relying on plugins, automation or generative tools — just hands-on craftsmanship, experimentation and rigorous rendering.
Each curve was modeled manually, every material and light interaction was tested through iterative renders, and every artistic decision was intentional. This was a process rooted in discipline and deep focus, a true exercise in refined creative thinking.
The resulting piece appeared on the cover of Les Cahiers du Musée national d’art moderne – Centre Pompidou and became a landmark in my practice, reminding me that tools can evolve, but critical judgment, sensitivity, and craft remain essential to design.
